Take a premium full-suspension mountain bike and combine it with a high-output 72V 3kW electric conversion system to create a serious off-road performance machine.

Built around the Boardman MTR 8.6, this custom conversion combines the bike’s capable full-suspension trail platform with a 72V 3000W brushless hub motor, 30Ah high-capacity battery, heavy-duty MTX wheel, high-current controller and UKC1 colour TFT display.

The result is a powerful, responsive and highly capable electric MTB designed for riders looking for substantially more performance than a conventional UK-spec e-bike.

 

THE BIKE – BOARDMAN MTR 8.6

The Boardman MTR 8.6 provides a strong foundation for this performance build.

The standard MTR 8.6 features a 6061 alloy frame, internal cable routing and a 130mm-travel suspension platform. Boardman’s published specification includes a Suntour XCR34 Boost 130mm air fork and RockShox Deluxe Select rear shock, giving the bike a suspension setup designed for modern trail riding.

The chassis also features a modern geometry designed around stability and control, while the wide 29” x 2.4” Maxxis tyre setup provides a substantial contact patch for off-road riding.

72V 3KW MTX CONVERSION SYSTEM

At the heart of the build is a 72V 3000W brushless gearless hub motor, providing a substantial increase in power over a conventional pedal-assist e-bike.

The motor is built into a heavy-duty MTX39 double-wall rim, with the conversion specification using heavy-gauge spokes for additional strength.

72V 30Ah HIGH-CAPACITY BATTERY

The 72V 30Ah battery provides a substantial energy reserve for the 3kW system.

With a nominal capacity of approximately 2,160Wh (72V × 30Ah), this is a considerably larger battery than those normally found on conventional pedal-assist e-bikes.

Actual range will vary considerably depending on rider weight, terrain, temperature, riding style, tyre pressures, gearing, power settings and how much throttle is used.

For this reason, we do not quote a guaranteed mileage figure.

The battery is paired specifically with the 72V electrical system and should only be charged using the supplied/matched charger.

 

UKC1 COLOUR TFT DISPLAY

The build is equipped with a UKC1 colour TFT display.

The UKC1 platform is designed for high-voltage conversion systems and supports battery systems up to 72V. Depending on the controller configuration, the display provides information such as:

• Current speed
• Battery status
• Trip distance
• Odometer
• Power/wattage information
• Operating information
• Fault/error codes
• System settings
• USB charging connection

This gives the rider clear information about the electrical system while riding.

 

PERFORMANCE-FOCUSED BUILD

This isn’t a conventional 250W pedal-assist e-bike.

The 72V 3kW system has been selected for riders wanting considerably stronger acceleration, hill-climbing ability and overall performance for private land and off-road use.

The combination of:

72V battery + 3kW hub motor + high-current controller + MTX39 wheel + full-suspension MTB chassis

creates a purpose-built performance conversion rather than a standard commuter e-bike.

Performance will depend on the final controller settings, wheel size, rider weight, terrain and battery specification. We therefore do not advertise a fixed top speed because actual performance can vary significantly between builds.

The Boardman MTR 8.6 is supplied with Tektro hydraulic disc brakes in its standard specification, but for customers intending to use the additional performance of the 72V 3kW system, we can discuss upgraded braking options before the bike is built.

Brake upgrades can be specified according to your intended use, riding style and preferred component level.

IMPORTANT UK LEGAL & SAFETY INFORMATION

This is a high-powered 72V 3kW electric conversion and is not a UK-legal EAPC/pedal cycle simply because it is built onto an MTB.

UK electrically assisted pedal cycles have specific requirements regarding power, assistance and construction. A 72V 3kW conversion exceeds the normal EAPC specification.

This build is supplied for off-road/private-land use only unless the customer independently ensures that the vehicle has been appropriately registered, insured and approved for its intended road use.

Do not use this vehicle on public roads, public footpaths, cycle tracks or other public areas where its use is not legally permitted.

The owner/rider is responsible for complying with all applicable laws, insurance requirements and landowner permissions.

This is a high-performance electric vehicle. Appropriate protective equipment, including a suitable helmet and protective clothing, is strongly recommended.

 

BATTERY SAFETY

Lithium-ion batteries contain significant stored energy and must be treated with care.

Always:

• Use the correct charger supplied/recommended for the battery
• Inspect the battery and wiring regularly
• Do not use a damaged or swollen battery
• Keep electrical connections dry and secure
• Follow the supplied charging instructions
• Never modify the battery without appropriate technical expertise
• Stop using the battery if it becomes damaged or behaves abnormally

The battery should be charged in a suitable, safe location away from combustible materials.
